17 Sep 2007What type of leaders do we have for God’s sake? The House of Rep. leader is still facing corruption charges. And here is another story that the Senate President’s guards beat up a reporter while he watched. Does he still think he is in the military? Here is the story:
Security guards attached to Senate President David Mark, yesterday, beat up the Makurdi reporter of Thisday Newspapers, after a church service at the Catholic Chapel of the Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi.
The incident which occurred in the presence of the Senate President, came a day after the paramount ruler of Idomaland, Ogaba-Idu Elias Ikoyi Obekpa washed his hands off the case between David Mark and ANPP’s Alhaji Usman Dan Abubakar Maishanu at the elections tribunal.
The Och’Idoma who received Abubakar alias Young Alhaji in his Otukpo palace, Saturday listened as the petitioner refused the plea for out of court settlement, and set a date for all interest groups to hear for themselves.
Mr. Abel Orih Idoma, Benue correspondent of Thisday, was beaten before the senate president who then removed a white handkerchief and offered to clean off the badly rushing blood off the victim’s lips.
The reporter who attended the Catholic mass alongside other journalists upon invitation by the university authority, approached the senate president with his tape recorder drawn for interview when a plain clothed security guard seized him by the collars and head butted his lips repeatedly.
The badly bleeding Abel Orih Idoma fell flat on the ground before his attacker left him in the pool of blood. The senate president who watched on as his security aide beat up the journalist, rushed and removed a white hand kerchief which he left on the bleeding body of the victim before he rushed into his waiting vehicle and left the scene.
The action of the senate president left the students who had gathered in solidarity to their visitor shouting anti establishment slogans, insisting David Mark must be impeached for such “undistinguished action”. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he was receiving treatment at the time of filing this report.
Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Mr. Paul Mumeh refused to comment except for plea to reporters not to file any report on the incident.
Young Alhaji had the previous day, paid homage to the paramount ruler of Idomaland who had joined the political class in putting pressure to the petitioner to withdraw from the tribunal against David Mark.
He told the palace that he was not going to withdraw from the tribunal, insisting that he was like a pregnant woman who has already gone to the labour room for delivery. “You cannot abort the baby at this time, it is too late”, said Young Ahaji who therefore queried why Idomas are more bothered than the main beneficiary of senate presidency seat.
